A strong immune system helps to keep a person healthy. Can specific foods help to boost the immune system? This month feeling healthy is focusing on boosting our immune systems and getting ready for the winter season ahead. Keep reading to find out more!
Feeding your body with certain foods will help to boost your immune system and help to keep your immune system strong over the winter season. If you’re looking for ways to prevent winter colds and the flu, your first step should be a visit to your local grocery store. Plan your meals to include these powerful immune system boosters in your daily diet.

Having a healthy and balanced diet can play a vital role in staying well. The following foods may help to boost the immune system over the coming winter months.
Citrus:

Most people tend to start supplementing with Vitamin C after they have caught the cold or flu. Vitamin C helps to build up your immune system and is thought to increase the production of white blood cells. These are our key cells that help fight infections. Because your body doesn’t produce or store Vitamin C you need to acquire it from your daily diet and with a variety of different citrus fruits that are available it is easy to add it to any meal a day.
Citrus fruit such as Oranges, Mandarins, Grapefruit, Kiwi Fruit, Lemons and Limes are an excellent source of Vitamin C, which helps maintain the body’s defence against bacterial infections. Citrus has a unique type of fibre that, in studies, appears to dramatically reduce our cholesterol levels as well. So why not start your day with a healthy fruit salad or better yet end it with one.

Garlic:

Garlic is an immune system warrior. It helps to protect the body from infections and illnesses. Garlic contains allicin, a potent phytonutrients that is great for cardiac health. It has been shown to help lower blood pressure, inhibit blood clotting and promote healthy cholesterol levels. Garlic is found in almost every cuisine in the world. It adds a little zing to your food and it’s a must have for your health.

Red Capsicum:

If you think citrus fruits have the most vitamin C, think again! Ounce for ounce, red capsicums contain twice as much vitamin C as any citrus fruit out there, besides boosting your immune system, vitamin C may help maintain healthy skin. Red capsicums are a great vegetable to add to your stir fry, pasta sauce, as a side vegetable or to have on their own as a healthy snack option mixed with some humus dip YUMMY.
